The Ruptured Duck was one of 16 B-25s launched from the Aircraft Carrier USS Hornet (CV-8) on April 18, 1942This was a surprise attack on Tokyo in retaliation for Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor 4 months earlier. This aircraft carried three demolition bombs and one incendiary cluster. The first bomb landed in a canal just missing a steel pipe factory causing minor damage. The second bomb detonated on a pile of coke — a fuel used in steel mills. The Ruptured Duck and crew ditched in the China Sea after running out of fuel. All the crew were injured to some degree, but survived and made it home.
